Tonsil stones, also known as tonsilloliths, are small, calcified formations that develop in the crevices of the tonsils.
They are composed of debris, such as food particles, dead cells, and bacteria, that get trapped in the tonsil crypts (small pockets or folds in the tonsils). Over time, this trapped material can harden or calcify, forming stones.
Symptoms of tonsil stones may include:
• Bad breath (halitosis)
• Sore throat
• Difficulty swallowing
• A feeling of something stuck in the throat
• White or yellowish visible stones in the tonsils
• Ear pain (referred pain from the throat)
Treatment options:
• Gargling with salt water or mouthwash
• Using a cotton swab or toothbrush to dislodge the stones
• Drinking plenty of water to prevent debris buildup
• In severe or recurrent cases, medical procedures such as laser tonsil cryptolysis or tonsillectomy (removal of the tonsils) may be recommended
If you suspect you have tonsil stones and are experiencing discomfort or frequent infections, it is best to consult with a healthcare professional for proper diagnosis and treatment.
